David Mackenzie’s Relay Gets an Delightfully Retro Trailer

David Mackenzie’s Relay, starring Riz Ahmed as a “fixer” for corrupt corporations, had its world premier at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. A year later, it’s finally arriving in theaters, and to help promote it, Bleecker Street created this awesome trailer that perfectly captures the look and feel of those great paranoid thrillers from the ’70s, like The Conversation, The Parallax View, and Three Days of the Condor.

Here’s the official synopsis:

In RELAY, Riz Ahmed plays a world class “fixer” who specializes in brokering lucrative payoffs between corrupt corporations and the individuals who threaten their ruin. He keeps his identity a secret through meticulous planning and always follows an exacting set of rules. But when a message arrives one day from a potential client (Lily James), needing his protection just to stay alive, the rules quickly start to change.

IndieWire’s David Ehrlich sang Relay’s praises at last year’s TIFF, calling it “sharp, fun, and smartly entertaining from its first scene to its final twist.” ScreenAnarchy’s Kurt Halfyard was similarly positive, comparing it to “a less bombastic, more low-key, version of Michael Mann’s Heat.” I was mildly curious about Relay, but after seeing this trailer, I’m definitely interested.

Relay arrives in theaters on August 22, 2025.
