“Drifters and Dreamers” by Rebecca Foon and Aliayta Foon-Dancoes

Over the years, Montréal cellist Rebecca Foon has been involved in some of Canada’s most well-known and celebrated post-rock outfits (e.g., Esmerine, A Silver Mt. Zion, Set Fire to Flames). But on Reverie, she eschews the large collectives. Instead, she’s partnered with her sister, violinist Aliayta Foon-Dancoes, who has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, studied at the Royal College of Music, and is currently pursuing a Composition PhD at Princeton University.

Reverie offers exactly that with eleven songs of lush modern classical music, each one a showcase for the sisters’ skillful interplay. “Drifters and Dreamers” is particularly enchanting, and even playful at times as cello and violin arrangements drift in and around rolling piano melodies. Put simply, the song more than lives up to its title; though barely three minutes long, it’ll certainly leave you in a drifting and dreaming state of mind.
