The First Tron: Ares Trailer Is Filled with Awesome Visuals
I rewatched 2010’s Tron: Legacy several months ago, and I was struck once again by the disconnect between my love for that film’s visuals and aesthetic, and my underwhelmed response to its story. I suspect I’ll have a similar reaction to Tron: Ares, which is technically a sequel to Tron: Legacy, but actually looks like more of a reboot. (For starters, neither Garrett Hedlund nor Olivia Wilde appear on the cast list.)
Let’s be clear, though: The first trailer for Tron: Ares is definitely filled with awesome sights. The light cycle’s trail cutting through a chasing police car? Awesome. That jet getting sliced up by more light trails? Awesome. The Recognizer launching all of those missiles through the city streets? Really awesome. And making these visuals even more awesome is a Nine Inch Nails soundtrack.
But the story, in which the denizens of the computer world — led by super soldier Ares (Jared Leto) — travel to our world? It seems kind of hokey if I’m honest, like an obvious attempt to glom onto current AI concerns in an attempt at hip relevance. I guess we’ll find out for sure, though, on October 10, 2025, when Tron: Ares opens in theaters.
