“Four Four For All Time” by Soundpool

Back in the mid ’00s and early ’10s, New York’s Soundpool performed a style of music they called “discogaze” due to its blend of swirly guitars, dreamy vocals, and club-friendly synths and beats. The group perfected their sound with 2010’s Mirrors In Your Eyes, and then disbanded, with founding members Kim Field and John Ceparano forming the similarly gaze-y Stargazer Lilies.

But somehow, I’d missed that Soundpool had reunited. Long enough, anyway, to release a new single in 2023, their first new music in 13 years. “Four Four For All Time” picks up right where Mirrors In Your Eyes left off. The band’s guitars are still as swirly as ever, Fields’ voice is as dreamy as ever, and once the beats kick in, they’ll turn your room into a discothèque. As for those classic Daft Punk arpeggios and the New Order-esque bassline, well, they’re just the icing on the cake.
