“Kisses” by Slowdive

Back in April, I noted that Slowdive had finished recording their fifth album in light of some comments Neil Halstead had made on a podcast. Originally conceived as a minimal electronic album due to Halstead’s interest in modular synths, Everything Is Alive inevitably turned back towards the group’s trademark sound during the multi-year recording process — as evidenced by the dreamy first single, “Kisses.”

If the press release is to be believed, Everything Is Alive could be the most eclectic Slowdive album to date, with “psychedelic soundscapes, pulsating 80’s electronic elements, and John Cale-inspired journeys.” Adding a somber note is the album’s dedication to Rachel Goswell’s mother and Simon Scott’s father, both of whom died in 2020. But in light of everything that’s happened since their last album, Halstead notes that “It wouldn’t feel right to make a really dark record right now. The album is quite eclectic emotionally, but it does feel hopeful.”

Everything Is Alive will be released on September 1, 2023 by Dead Oceans.

In addition to the new album, Slowdive will also be touring throughout the summer and fall, with dates in Australia, New Zealand, North America, the UK, and Ireland.
