Macross Has Finally Come to Hulu

After a long delay, American audiences can now enjoy one of anime’s most iconic franchises.

Last March, I wrote that Macross would be coming to Disney+, giving American fans a chance to finally — and legally — watch one of anime’s most iconic franchises. For whatever reason, that never came to pass even as Macross became accessible in other parts of the world. That’s finally changing, however, with numerous Macross titles now streaming on Hulu:

That’s certainly a lot of Macross, but interestingly, the list does not include Super Dimension Fortress Macross, the series that kicked off the entire franchise back in 1982 (and was subsequently re-edited to create Robotech here in the States).

As for why this is all coming to Hulu, and not Disney+, that’s probably because Hulu already has an extensive anime library that includes Attack on Titan, Bleach!, Cowboy Bebop, Naruto, One Punch Man, and Spy x Family, to name a few. And now it can count an anime classic amongst its many offerings.

Personally, I’m mainly interested in Macross Zero (I’ve only see the first episode, courtesy of an import DVD) and Macross Frontier (which has some of my favorite mecha designs in all of Macross). If you’re new to Macross, though, I highly recommend Macross Plus, a true ’90s anime classic. (And if you’re really curious about the franchise, then check out my extensive Macross guide.)
