Mel Brooks Officially Announces Spaceballs 2

I can still remember the first time I saw Spaceballs on TV in 6th or 7th grade. I had no idea what I was watching, exactly, but as the opening scene unfolded, with the massive, seemingly endless spaceship and ominous music, I was all in. I just knew the movie was going to be awesome… and then I saw the spaceship’s “We brake for nobody” bumper sticker, and all bets were off.

Spaceballs is, of course, a sci-fi comedy classic, filled with goofy parodies, ridiculous characters, clever fourth wall breaks, and classic lines (e.g., “I am your father’s brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate”). One of the jokes was the inevitable sequel, titled Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money. There was a Spaceballs followup of sorts, in the form of an animated series that ran for one season on G4 in 2008 and 2009, but there’s never been a proper sequel… until now.

While plot details remain unknown, Spaceballs 2 will be released by Amazon MGM Studios and written by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad, with Josh Greenbaum (Will & Harper, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) directing. Most significantly, though, Mel Brooks, Bill Pullman, and Rick Moranis will reprise their roles as Yogurt, Lone Starr, and Dark Helmet, respectively. Moranis’ casting is particularly significant, as the actor has been largely absent from the screen for two decades, choosing instead to focus on being a single father. (His wife Ann died in 1991.)

Described as a “non-prequel non-reboot sequel part two but with reboot elements franchise expansion film,” Spaceballs 2 will arrive in theaters sometime in 2027, just in time for the original film’s 40th anniversary.

Update #1 (6/13/2025): Lewis Pullman, who happens to be Bill Pullman’s actual son, will star as Lone Starr’s son, named Starburst. Also, Daphne Zuniga is now expected to reprise her role as Queen Vespa.
