New Subscriber Playlist: “For the Love of Durutti”

Earlier this year, Vini Reilly released Renascent, the first new Durutti Column album in almost sixteen years. Given Reilly’s poor health and struggles with both poverty and mental illness, the album’s existence feels like something of a miracle, and even more so considering just how lovely it all sounds. Renascent is filled with Reilly’s trademark guitar-playing, which remains just as elegant and evocative as ever.

To mark the occasion, this month’s playlist, titled “For the Love of Durutti,” dives deep into Vini Reilly’s extensive and eclectic discography, and highlights just a few of the sonic gems that can be found therein.

Accompanying the playlist is the latest episode of my “Playlist Breakdown” podcast, in which I spotlight one of the playlist’s songs and why it’s so special, interesting, and/or meaningful. This month’s episode focuses on “Sketch for Summer,” an exceedingly pretty song that opens The Durutti Column’s 1980 debut, The Return of the Durutti Column.
