New Subscriber Playlist: “Of These Reminders, Volume 2”

This month’s subscriber-only playlist and podcast episode celebrates Projekt Records’ 40th anniversary.
Of These Reminders, Volume 2

This year marks the 40th anniversary of one of my favorite record labels: Sam Rosenthal’s Projekt Records. Originally started as a cassette-only label for Rosenthal to release his own music, the label has since become one of the world’s pre-eminent goth, darkwave, and ambient labels.

According to its Discogs profile, Projekt has put out over 750 releases in the last four decades. This month’s playlist — titled “Of These Reminders, Volume 2″ — highlights just a handful of those releases, and spans numerous genres, from goth and darkwave (Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Lycia), dreampop (Love Spirals Downwards), shoegaze (lovesliescrushing, Mira), and ambient/electronic (Forrest Fang, Steve Roach, Dirk Serries, Erik Wøllo).

Accompanying the playlist is the latest episode of my“Playlist Breakdown” podcast, in which I spotlight one of the playlist’s songs and why it’s so special, interesting, and/or meaningful. In this month’s episode, I discuss “Write in Water,” a gorgeous dreampop gem from Ardor, the 1994 sophomore album from Love Spirals Downwards.
