As it turns out, Sally Shapiro’s wisp of a voice and Johan Agebjörn’s sleek production are an absolutely perfect combination for covering synth-pop legends Pet Shop Boys. The duo’s upcoming album, Ready to Live a Lie, features a cover of “Rent,” a melodramatic ballad about a purely transactional relationship that originally appeared on 1987’s Actually.
Interestingly, the original Pet Shop Boys tune was inspired by the 1983 italo disco hit “I Like Chopin” by Gazebo. Which means that Shapiro’s own italo disco cover of the song brings everything full circle.
Ready to Live a Lie will be released on May 30, 2025.
