Ryan Gosling Heads Into Space to Save Humanity in Project Hail Mary’s First Trailer

In my review of Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary — which I thoroughly enjoyed when I read it back in 2022 — I remarked that I fully planned on seeing the inevitable movie adaptation. Which brings us to said adaptation’s first trailer.

Ryan Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher who suddenly wakes up light years from Earth with no memory of his critical mission: finding a way to stop the sun from dying. The trailer really highlights Grace’s reluctance at being sent into space and his cluelessness when he wakes up on a seemingly abandoned spaceship.

It all looks really promising so far, and we even get a sneak peak at the bizarre alien that Grace encounters during his mission. I don’t want to spoil anything, but Grace’s extraterrestrial companion is the book’s best part, so I really hope that directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller — best known for their work on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Lego Movie, and the Spider-Verse films — do it justice.

Project Hail Mary arrives in theaters on March 20, 2026. The film also stars Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, and Ken Leung.
