The post-punk artist was 44 years old.

The Soft Moon’s Luis Vasquez

I didn’t write much about The Soft Moon here on Opus, though “Wrong” was one of my favorite songs of 2015. As I wrote back then:

There’s never really been anything subtle about The Soft Moon’s brand of cold, brittle post-punk, or about Luis Vasquez’s ruminations on loneliness and angst. But there is something refreshing about his bluntness.

Luis Vasquez’s intensity meant that I always made a point of checking out the latest Soft Moon release when it came out, like 2022’s industrial-tinged Exister. Sadly, such music has been forever silenced.

Multiple sources have reported that Vasquez died earlier this week. No cause of death has been revealed, but Vasquez apparently died in the same incident that claimed the life of Silent Servant (aka John Juan Mendez) and Mendez’s partner.

The Soft Moon was scheduled to begin a short European tour in February, with dates in Denmark, Turkey, and The Netherlands.
