Studio Khara Announces a New Evangelion Series

Looks like we’re heading back to Tokyo-3 for more childhood trauma and esoteric religious references.

Earlier this week, a festival commemorating Neon Genesis Evangelion’s 30th anniversary concluded with a surprise announcement: A new Evangelion series is in the works, but not from series creator Hideaki Anno.

The new series, which was presented as the “Next Genesis” but currently has no official title or release date, will be written by Yokō Tarō, best known for creating the acclaimed Nier: Automata video game, and directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki and Tōko Yatabe, both of whom worked on the Rebuild of Evangelion film tetralogy. Studio Khara is co-producing the series with CloverWorks (Spy × Family, The Promised Neverland, Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai).

As Polygon points out, the big question is how this new series will fit within the broader Evangelion mythology, especially considering that all previous Evangelion titles had pretty definitive endings (with some definitely more disturbing than others). It seems most likely that this new series will be a reboot of some kind, but given Tarō’s proclivity for unusual and unorthodox storytelling, all bets are probably off.
