“To Wish Impossible Things” by Kid Tigrrr

The song is the highlight on a recent compilation of Cure covers.

Earlier this month, God Is in the TV released Pictures of You, a 45-song compilation of Cure covers. I didn’t recognize any of the artists on the compilation, and suffice to say, they’re an eclectic bunch, ranging from synth-pop and indie-rock to pop punk, piano ballads, and even some lo-fi chiptune for good measure.

But for my money, the compilation’s best track is Kid Tigrrr’s hushed, otherworldly cover of “To Wish Impossible Things,” which originally appeared 1992’s Wish. Kid Tigrrr is the solo project of Jenna Fournier, lead singer of the shoegaze outfit Niights; her shimmering soundscapes and cooing vocals are a perfect fit for the song, which is arguably one of The Cure’s most heartbreaking and poignant compositions.

Pictures of You is currently available on Bandcamp, with all proceeds going to Mind, a UK-based mental health charity. Kid Tigrrr’s most recent release is the “Scryy” single, which is exclusive to her Bandcamp page.
