Thanks to bangers like “Da Funk,” “Around the World,” “One More Time,” “Harder Better Faster Stronger,” and “Robot Rock,” it’s easy to forget that Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo also possessed a softer, more sensitive side.

Like the rest of Random Access Memories, “The Game of Love” is a lavish affair. However, the wistful arrangements and glossier than glossy production results in a strikingly melancholy ballad that — with the addition of the duo’s trademark vocoder and some forlorn lyrics (“And it was you, the one that would be breaking my heart/When you decided to walk away”) — feels like the lament of a heartbroken robot.
