To call Brock Van Wey “prolific” would be a gross understatement. According to Discogs, he’s released nearly 80 albums since 2007, not to mention numerous EPs and compilation appearances. And that’s just under his Bvdub moniker, to say nothing of his other projects (Earth House Hold, East of Oceans) and remix work.

As such, it can be hard to know where to start, especially given his penchant for vivid album titles (e.g., Epilogues For the End of the Sky, Decades on Divided Stars, The Ghost Where You Used to Be). But even after all these years, Serenity remains my favorite Bvdub album. That’s partially because it’s one of Van Wey’s most ambient albums. While Serenity features plenty of beats, they’re submerged beneath glacier-sized layers of sweeping, evocative synths that are accompanied by soulful vocals.

The result is an emotional album that exhibits Van Wey’s romanticism at its deepest and truest. Van Wey wears his heart on his sleeve, even when standing behind what must be a wall of synths and sequencers, and it’s why a song like “Serenity” is able to reach the euphoric heights that it does.
