“Midnight City” by M83
There’s nothing subtle about M83’s sprawling Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. Composed after Anthony Gonzalez had moved to Los Angeles and experienced a burst of inspiration, the double album is full of wide-screen synth-pop and shoegaze galore. (Not surprisingly, it was touted as one of 2011’s best albums by numerous critics.)
It could be argued that lead single “Midnight City” is the definitive M83 track, filled to bursting with massive synths and arena-sized drums that perfectly match Gonzalez’s wide-eyed vocals. And for the pièce de résistance, the song ends with an epic sax solo by James King (Fitz and the Tantrums). What could’ve been so lame and clichéd instead sends the already transcendent song into a whole ‘nother plane of existence, especially when paired with Fleur & Manu’s psychic-powered music video.
