New Subscriber Playlist: “Blue Collar Love”

As far as I’m concerned, Starflyer 59 frontman Jason Martin is one of the hardest working guys in the music business. For nearly forty years, he’s been making some of the most noteworthy music in the indie scene, Christian or otherwise.

In honor of Starflyer 59’s latest release — the excellent Lust for Gold — this month’s playlist, titled “Blue Collar Love,” features nearly ninety minutes of Jason Martin’s non-Starflyer collaborations, both as a bandmate and behind the boards. Included are collaborations with family members, including his wife, son, and brother Ronnie (of Joy Electric fame) as well as various icons including David Bazan and Terry Scott Taylor.

Accompanying the playlist is the latest episode of my “Playlist Breakdown” podcast, in which I spotlight one of the playlist’s songs and why it’s so special, interesting, and/or meaningful. This month’s episode focuses on “Honeylands” by Morella’s Forest, one of Martin’s earliest recordings with Ronnie, and a fascinating bit of indie/alternative Christian music history.
