New Subscriber Playlist: “Enter the Chamber”

For those of us who love listening to dark, harrowing soundscapes — or, to quote the old Cold Meat Industry slogan, “the evolving sound of someone else’s nightmare” — one of the best places for that sort of material is Oregon’s Cryo Chamber label.
Run by Simon Heath, who also releases music as Atrium Carceri, Mountain Realm, and Sabled Sun, Cryo Chamber has established itself as one of the modern era’s finest purveyors of dark ambience, releasing music from artists spanning the globe. This month’s playlist, titled “Enter the Chamber,” offers an introduction to the label’s extensive catalog.
Accompanying the playlist is the latest episode of my “Playlist Breakdown” podcast, in which I spotlight one of the playlist’s songs and why it’s so special, interesting, and/or meaningful. This month’s episode focuses on The Void Wanderer’s “In My Restless Dreams,” a surprisingly succinct and (dare I say) pretty entry into the dark ambient genre. (The Void Wanderer’s Empty World is one of my favorite ambient releases of 2024; read my review.)
