New Subscriber Playlist: “The Music of ASC”

No one can ever accuse James Clements of being a slacker. In a career spanning nearly three decades, the California-based British producer has released a staggering amount of music under various monikers including Comit, Intex Systems, Mindspan, and most famously, ASC. In fact, he’s released over 220 titles as ASC alone, which can make it hard to know where to begin with his highly atmospheric brand of jungle and drum ‘n’ bass — even if you’ve been listening to his music for years.

This month’s playlist, titled “The Music of ASC,” is my effort to scratch the surface of Clements’ extensive catalog. These 17 songs, which clock in at just under two hours, highlight both the rhythmic and ambient extremes of ASC’s music as well as some of his numerous collaborations.

Accompanying the playlist is the latest episode of my “Playlist Breakdown” podcast, in which I spotlight one of the playlist’s songs and why it’s so special, interesting, and/or meaningful. This month’s episode focuses on “Kelp Forest,” one of the more ambient tracks in ASC’s catalog, a haunting exploration of the ocean’s shadowy depths.
