New Subscriber Playlist: “Obscure and Unsung”

A recent thread on Bluesky urged folks to share that one band or musical project that it feels like they’re the only fan of. It was an opportunity for everyone to share their favorite overlooked and unsung bands. I’ve been running Opus for 27 years now, and during that time, I’ve often felt like I’m writing about bands of which I’m the only fan — a situation I desperately want to change, hence all of my blogging.

This month’s playlist, titled “Obscure and Unsung,” serves as a clearinghouse of artists and albums that I’ve written about over the years. Some of the artists have since called it quits, but that doesn’t change the fact that their music deserves any and all attention that it might receive.

Accompanying the playlist is the latest episode of my “Playlist Breakdown” podcast, in which I spotlight one of the playlist’s songs and why it’s so special, interesting, and/or meaningful. This month’s episode focuses on My Favorite’s “L=P,” a delightfully mopey slice of indie-pop that transcends its obvious influences (e.g., The Smiths).
