New Subscriber Playlist: “Warp Factor Ten”

This month’s subscriber-only playlist and podcast episode celebrates one of the most influential electronic music labels of all time.

When it comes to electronic music, one label quickly emerges at the front of the pack: Warp Records. Since its founding in 1989 by a couple of record store employees and a record producer, Warp has become synonymous with some of the most influential and celebrated acts in electronic music history, including Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Boards of Canada.

In light of the upcoming reissue of Aphex Twin’s landmark Selected Ambient Works Volume II, this month’s playlist, titled “Warp Factor Ten,” features two hours of some of my favorite songs from Warp Records’ storied catalog.

Accompanying the playlist is the latest episode of my “Playlist Breakdown” podcast, in which I spotlight one of the playlist’s songs and why it’s so special, interesting, and/or meaningful. This month’s episode focuses on Plone’s “Bibi Plone,” an otherworldly bit of electronic whimsy from an unsung entry in the Warp catalog.
