I’ve been rewatching The Expanse with my oldest, and it’s been a blast to be back aboard the Rocinante with Holden et al. as they traverse the solar system while trying to survive war, political upheaval, and of course, the protomolecule.

The Expanse’s universe is so rich and compelling that sometimes I imagine what it’d be like to crew my own ship in the 24th century. Which is precisely what Owlcat Games’ upcoming The Expanse: Osiris Reborn promises.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is a third-person sci-fi action RPG set in the universe of The Expanse, where the tenuous balance of power between Earth, Mars, and the Belt is on the brink of collapse, and trust is a scarce commodity. Now it is time to gather a crew and find your own path through the web of lies to leave your mark on the solar system. By the 24th century, humanity has conquered the cosmos, but that hasn’t made life any easier. What begins as a brief sojourn on the asteroid Eros reluctantly entangles you in a solar system-wide conspiracy. You will need to adapt to survive and keep your motley crew united in their mission as everything around you begins to fall apart. This is your story. The Expanse: Osiris Reborn offers a truly personal journey that evolves based on the choices you make and the pressures they place on everything you stand for.

As others have noted, the game’s first trailer has a real Mass Effect vibe — which is not a bad thing. I spent many hours aboard the Normandy with Commander Shepard back in the day, and I still think Mass Effect 2 is one of the best games I’ve ever played.

In a recent interview, Owlcat’s creative director and head of publishing make clear the Mass Effect influence (“it’s part of our dream to build something like the thing we experienced while we were kids and that made a great impression on us”) while also expressing their goal to build out The Expanse’s universe and allow players to “see some of the locations you know from the shows or from the books in different states or in a different light.” (Even more exciting, they also reveal that several Expanse actors will be reprising their roles for the game.)

No release date has been announced, but The Expanse: Osiris Reborn will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC. The game will also be released in several editions, including a deluxe “Collectors” edition that comes with special packaging, an artbook, and even a model of your in-game spaceship.
