“Sky Hooks” by Seefeel

It doesn’t feel quite right to call the first single from Seefeel’s upcoming Everything Squared a “single.” For starters, there are no pop hooks or catchy melodies to be found anywhere within its six minutes. Rather, “Sky Hooks” finds Mark Clifford and Sarah Peacock performing some of their most skeletal and stripped down music since 1996’s (Ch-Vox).

Peacock’s at her most “little girl lost” as her indecipherable vocals drift amidst swirling and diaphanous guitar tones. Meanwhile, distant beats provide the slightest of frameworks — for the first few minutes, anyway. The resulting song feels like the most contemplative and intimate moments of Quique (e.g., “Charlotte’s Mouth,” “Through You”) stripped down to their barest essence.

“Sky Hooks” might represent “a contemporary evolution of their trademark sound” (to use the band’s description), but it’s still as beguiling as anything in Seefeel’s catalog.
