“Standing Start” by Inquiri and Karen Vogt

A lovely collaboration between American and French ambient artists.

Last month, Echoes Blue Music and Cloud Collecting released the first Gentle Voices compilation, which features ten collaborative tracks by women from around the world who work in the ambient music genre. Some of the artists featured have previously appeared on Opus, including IKSRE, Anita Tatlow (who co-curated the compilation), and Birds of Passage.

As expected from an Echoes Blue Music release, Gentle Voices is uniformly excellent stuff, but the compilation’s final track is the one I keep returning to. A collaboration between the USA’s Inquiri (aka, Lacey Harris) and France-by-way-of-Australia’s Karen Vogt, the seven-minute “Standing Start” builds upon a sample of Vogt’s wordless vocals with building strings and slowly unfurling textures that grow all the more lovely with each passing second.

Gentle Voices, Vol. 1 is currently available on Echoes Blue Music.
