Baldur’s Gate 3 Opening Cinematic: Illithids, Dragons, and Gith, Oh My!

The latest installment of the acclaimed video game franchise is based on D&D 5th Edition.

My Dungeons & Dragons campaign has been tangling with some nasty illithids as of late, so I got a real kick out of the recently released cinematic for Baldur’s Gate 3, the latest installment of the acclaimed game franchise.

The cinematic — which opens the game — features a lone illithid doing what they do best (i.e., subjugating other races by converting them into fellow mind flayers through a nasty process called ceremorphosis) whilst soaring through the skies in a giant, tentacled spaceship that can also teleport. On, and it features several dragon-riding githyanki for good measure. (Gamespot has a nice breakdown of the cinematic.)

Baldur’s Gate 3 is based on the D&D 5th Edition ruleset — and yes, you’ll apparently be making dice rolls at various points in the game, including combat. (It’ll be interesting to see how that mechanic translates from the tabletop to the computer.) No release date has been announced yet, though.
