Lego Boldly Goes Where No One Has Gone Before

Star Trek: The Next Generation is one of my all-time favorite TV shows, and of all the various iterations of the vaunted USS Enterprise that have soared across the screen, the Enterprise-D has always been my favorite. So needless to say, I think it’s very cool that Lego’s first ever official Star Trek set will be of Jean-Luc Picard’s iconic starship. (Fans, of course, have made their own Enterprise-D models over the years.)

First, the bad news: The Enterprise-D set, which will be officially released on November 28 and is currently available for preorder, costs $400. The good news, however, is that you’re getting a lot of starship for that much money.

Weighing in at 3,600 pieces, the Enterprise-D set will be approximately 10.5 inches tall, 23.5 inches long, and 18.5 inches wide, and features a detachable saucer section. Also included are nine minifigures of the main TNG crew, all of whom have their own accessories, including Picard’s cup of Earl Grey tea (hot, of course), Riker’s trombone, Spot the cat, and even Wesley’s tractor beam contraption from “The Naked Now.” (The level of nerdy detail in this set is just delightful.)

And if all of that weren’t enough, Gizmodo reports that if you order the Enterprise-D set between November 28 and December 1, then Lego will throw in a bonus 261-piece set of the Enterprise’s Onizuka shuttlepod complete with an Ensign Ro Laren minifigure.

I’m sure Lego aficionados and Trekkies alike will find plenty to nitpick — I’ve already seen some comments complaining that it’s not “curvy” enough — but I’m geeking out over here. Sadly, this set’s not really within my budget right now — grumble car repairs grumble — but I’m excited to see what other Star Trek sets might be coming in the future, like other versions of the Enterprise or even a Klingon Bird of Prey.
